Darren (Unkl D) Kiyotsuka has been a part of the local music scene on both the Big Island and on Kauai for over 40 years (yes, he’s old) in various iterations first on bass
guitar and more recently on acoustic guitar. He started playing in bands such as Jadessence in Hilo and with several bands on Kauai including Kainoa Ohana, Aloha
Breeze, and most recently, Wailoa. As a soloist, Unkl D has primarily been playing at restaurants on the South Shore and in Hanapepe.

Types of music that Unkl D plays include, Hawaiian, Hawaiian Contemporary, oldies(50’s through 80’s) with reggae and country to a lesser extent. Unkl D considers himself an entertainer who plays music in contrast to a musician who just plays music as he will engage those in the audience if the situation allows for it with jokes and humorous stories.
